To my knowledge the Nokia boxes do not have any specialised hardware, though my familiarity with the Nokia's is pretty limited. BTW, the network performance difference between BSD and Linux should be kept in perspective, as it is quite negligable. Meaning a properly configured Linux box can outperform a default BSD installation and vice versa. Also I remember seeing figures on a web site showing a high quality Linux box outperforming every other platform, though I can't remember where this was exactly so don't take it as official information. But don't get me wrong, I think the Nokia boxes are great, if a little expensive and inflexible. If it wasn't specialized hardware, then why is the Linux version of CP not as fast? I know the BSD networking code is faster, but not that much faster than Linux net code. I have no experience with a nokia box, so I'm speaking with no concrete knowledge. Sorry about that :) -----Original Message----- From: Mark Decker [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 25, 2000 6:02 PM To: Jonah Kowall; 'a burbatsky'; [email protected] Subject: RE: [FW1] How big is the BSD operating system code on a Nokia box? Is this new? I thought the Nokia boxes were essentially just PCs in a nifty rack-mount case. What part of the OS is offloaded to specialized hardware? -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Jonah Kowall Sent: Monday, September 25, 2000 2:25 PM To: 'a burbatsky'; [email protected] Subject: RE: [FW1] How big is the BSD operating system code on a Nokia box? Oh another note... the Cisco and nokia boxes also use a lot of specialized hardware which eliminate the need for size on disk or memory. -----Original Message----- From: a burbatsky [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 25, 2000 5:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [FW1] How big is the BSD operating system code on a Nokia box? Hello: How big is the BSD operating system code on a Nokia box? I am trying to compare it to the core size of a PIX. The PIX O/S is about 600K.
