Thanks for you input Robert, On closer inspection if does appear to be some kind of DNS problem, nothing to do with the firewall. My DNS appears to be set up correctly and in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file my entry for hosts is as follows hosts: files dns So the host file etc is looked at first and then it uses DNS, I guess there's something wrong with the files lookup that's generating this error but then it's moving on to using DNS and sucessfully looking up the adddress. To be honest everything appears to be working, mail is not being rejected - it's just that I'm getting this error generated in the /etc/fw/log/asmtpd.log file thousands of times a day. I suppose it's more of a Solaris issue so I'll go and see what I can find in on the Sun site. Thanks again for your help. My first inclination would be that it's DNS too. When you ask your system to verify the remote, it will attempt to reverse the IP to a name. The gethostbyaddr() is telling us that. Look thru how your DNS would function and don't assume anything - verify. Robert - - Robert P.
