I know this has been discussed several times on the list in the past. Isn't there an archive of this at securityfocus? You might check there for exact details. The "ptr" files are pointer files used by log viewer as far as I recollect. I'm not sure exactly what purpose the .alog's serve but I've always deleted them. What I usually do is delete all the logptr's and the .alog. Then when you do a logswitch on the *.log it will create another *.logptr to be used. From there you can logexport into a txt file. If you ever plan on viewing the logfiles through FW-1's logviewer, save the *.log and *.logptr, stick it in the $FWDIR dir and you should be able to open the file within logviewer. Otherwise, delete the *.log and *.logptr's and archive the exported text file. Grep to your heart's content. Can someone explain to me the differences in the files that are created when a log file is created with FW1? I see 4 files for each day with the extensions (.alog, .alogptr, .log and .logptr) Are all of these needed. It appears that the main log is the .log file. I am trying to work on getting these files off of my FW/Mgmt Station so that I can start analyzing these files better and store them. I searched Checkpoint and Phoneboy and found nothing of use......Please help!! Thanks.
