The problem is that an smtp conection is initiated, then an ident request is made in return. The firewall will drop the return connection and the ident will timeout. Unfortunately, by the time this has happened, the smtp connection has timed out as well. If you have a mail server, you should add a rule which rejects ident requests to the server, instead of just letting them be dropped.
